Charleston County Libraries providing free after-school food programs

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Starting Monday, September 9, 2024, Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) will once again provide free, nutritious meals and snacks to kids and teens as part of its after-school food program.

The program, in partnership with the Lowcountry Food Bank (LCFB) and the Charleston FRIENDS of the Library (CFOL), aims to combat child hunger in the Charleston area by offering meals at select library branches through May 16, 2025.

Children and teens ages 5 to 18 can enjoy free meals or snacks Monday through Friday from 3-5 p.m. at the following library locations:

Kids Café Locations (in partnership with Lowcountry Food Bank):

Serving Hot Suppers

• St. Paul’s Hollywood Library (5130 Hwy 165)

Serving Cold Suppers

• Main Library (68 Calhoun St.)
• Keith Summey North Charleston (3503 Rivers Ave)

Serving Snacks

• Dorchester Road – (6325 Dorchester Rd)
• Hurd/St. Andrews (1735 N. Woodmere Dr)
• John’s Island (3531 Maybank Hwy) Served from 2:30 – 4:30 p.m.
• Otranto Road (2261 Otranto Rd) Served from 2:30 – 4:30 p.m.
• West Ashley (45 Windermere Blvd)

After-School Snack Program (Sponsored by Charleston FRIENDS of the Library):

• Baxter-Patrick James Island Library (1858 South Grimball Rd): Serving snacks Monday through Friday, 3-5 p.m.

The meals and snacks provided through the LCFB’s Kids Café program include healthy options like fruit, cheese, yogurt, and muffins. All food must be consumed on-site, and the program is open to all eligible participants.
