Stormwater improvements will also enhance hike/bike trail along Goose Creek roadway

GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (WCBD) – You may notice some work being done on the side of Highway 52 near Colonial Heights to improve stormwater drainage while also improving hiking and biking trails.

Frank Johnson, public information officer for the City of Goose Creek, said it was determined the hiking/biking trails in front of Colonial Heights were having some issues.

“There was some erosion in the adjacent stormwater ditch that was not allowing the trail to be properly supported along the stretch,” he explained.

The erosion was causing the hiker/biker trails to start cracking on the side nearest the ditch.

“What we’re doing with our partners at the county is adding some piping into the ditch as well as some stormwater boxes,” Johnson said.

Crews from Berkeley County Roads and Bridges were out installing the pipe on Monday. It will essentially do two things: allow the hiker/biker trails to no longer collapse toward the ditch, but it will also allow stormwater to flow much smoother when it’s raining, and help move water away from the area during a storm.

“We have a great relationship with Berkeley County. This is just one of many examples of that,” he added.

This project is funded using some stormwater fees collected annually on your property tax bill.

“When the work is done, this area of the trail will be resurfaced and will be as good as new,” said Johnson.

The project began last week and is expected to continue for the next few weeks.
