GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD)–After multiple community meetings across the county and receiving positive feedback from neighbors. Leaders are looking for more sites that need to be redeveloped.

“We’ve had two community meetings in the Georgetown and Andrews areas, and at this point last month, we have had a great response from the public. We’ve had a couple of suggestions for sites, and at this point, what we’re looking for is members to serve on a steering committee,” said Randy Akers, the deputy public information officer for Georgetown County.

The steering committee will be filled with residents looking for potential areas that could be revitalized to help meet the community’s growing needs. Areas that would qualify for revitalization would be old gas stations, factories, and vacant buildings. Leaders said the more community involvement, the better since more grants will come for new developments.

“Once we complete this assessment process, there are multiple opportunities for additional funding. For example, suppose you wanted to convert one of these old facilities into affordable housing, a park where people could put on plays, or whatever the community is interested in. In that case, this is the first step,” said Maureen Mulligan, an environmentalist for Georgetown County.

Officials said the project’s primary goal is to improve the quality of life for residents and future generations.

“We want to help serve our communities’ citizens and enhance our area’s beauty. We want to ensure that our communities are kept clean and safe for people and future generations.”

The next meeting is on September 30 at the chambers, beginning at 6 p.m. For more information on the Brownfield project and how to get involved, click down below.
