Charleston County working to make Dorchester Road safer

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Charleston County is working on a plan to reduce accidents on Dorchester Road, including widening and adding safety measures.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation conducted a study to see where they can prevent accidents along the roadway.

“These are desperate infrastructure needs for Charleston County,” said Mackenzie Kelley, the Engineering Manager at Capital Project with Charleston County Public Works.

As the Lowcountry population continues to grow, so does its traffic.

“Charleston County and Dorchester County are growing rapidly with all the development going, so these corridor projects will reduce congestion in increased capacity so we’re ready to take on the increased congestion loads,” said Kelley.

The state’s Department of Transportation has proposed road safety incidents beginning north of Michaux Parkway, extending southward towards Interstate 26, and ending just past Kent Avenue. The project will aim to reduce accidents for drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists along the road.

They are asking for the public’s help in improving traffic and road safety.

“We want to get feedback from the public to get their initial concepts especially the ones that drive this every day and sit in traffic we want to get their feedback in what improvements they’d like to see,” said Kelley.

SCDOT will hold a drop-in meeting for public input on road safety on September 26th at Jerry Zucker middle school.
