Area of low pressure off the southeastern U.S. coast being watched for development

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The National Hurricane Center continues to watch an area off the southeastern coast that could develop over the weekend.

Forecasters said a non-tropical area of low pressure could form along a residual frontal boundary a few hundred miles off the U.S. coastline in the next few days. They added that some subtropical or tropical development is likely early next week while the system drifts to the north or northwest.

“Our reliable models continue to hint strongly an area of low pressure will form along a front offshore, but until it does actually develop, it’s hard to speculate on potential impacts early next week. It bears watching due to the closeness to the Carolinas and Georgia, again, depending on if it develops at all,” said Storm Team 2 Chief Meteorologist Rob Fowler.

If the storm develops and it nears our area, we could see more rain, gusty wind, and coastal flooding from Sunday into Tuesday.

Still, periods of heavy rain are expected Friday and Saturday with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s.
