BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – A woman who lives near a busy Berkeley County intersection said she has an idea that could help make it less dangerous.

Jayne Carswell said her daughter was involved in an accident on Highway 41. She said a simple solution could make a big difference.

“My daughter was driving for three years, she knows the hazards of 41 and Reflectance, and Halfway Creek Road. She went through the middle of the day, one o’clock in the afternoon, and a gentleman from Seattle came across- assumed she was going to stop, and just went right into the intersection,” Carswell recalled.

She said the officer who responded told her that some people who are not used to the intersection do not know that Highway 41 does not stop there.

Carswell decided to contact the South Carolina Department of Transportation and Berkeley County and asked them to put up a sign that reads “Cross Traffic Does Not Stop” just below the stop sign on each side. She also submitted a work request to SCDOT.

“I didn’t get a response back. A few months later I called back and said what’s the status? And they really didn’t know. And I offered to pay for the signs, like make a donation. Could we pay for the signs? We just need to get the signs installed, you know, and not worry about all the bureaucracy,” she said.

Berkeley County Roads and Bridges shared the following statement:

“All four road approaches to this intersection, SC-41, Halfway Creek Road (S-8-100) and Reflectance Drive (S-8-100), are all roads that belong to SCDOT. SCDOT would have to approve and install any additional signs requested for this intersection.”

News 2 reached out to the South Carolina Department of Transportation who said they would get back to us with more information.

Quick add MORE SIGNAGE!!! Maybe some painting on the road…… maybe a few lights……. It’s not going to change the fact that it’s a blind sided intersection
