GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (WCBD) – The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating after a candidate said one of his campaign signs was removed.

Carlton Walker is running for South Carolina House seat 15 and said one of his signs on Red Bank Road was removed recently. The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office said they have investigated the matter and turned it over to state police.

“One of my yard signs- I noticed it was missing. So, I walked across the street to where it was supposed to be. I thought maybe it was blown down in the ditch, and it wasn’t there. So, I walked down the sidewalk to see if it was in one of the cars. My opponent was having a fundraiser. I was across the street with all of my stuff set up, and as I walked by, I noticed my sign was in the back of a car right at his event,” he said. “I immediately took a picture of the vehicle.”

Walker said he asked the man to give him his sign back, and he did. He then reached out to the sheriff’s office.

“These things are protected by South Carolina election law. It’s election interference,” Walker said.

News 2 reached out to the sheriff’s office, and they said they turned this investigation over to SLED. We left a message with the agency.

The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office report does say the vehicle identified with the sign in it is registered to a “Mr. Moore.”

Meanwhile, Sam Skardon, chairman of the Charleston County Democratic Party sent us a statement about the situation:

“The yard sign was on private property during a private event. There are real issues that need to be addressed in South Carolina and the voters deserve better than a Republican candidate who wastes their time, and law enforcement’s time, whining about yard signs.”

Walker, however, said the sign was not on private property, nor was it on the property where the event was being held.

News 2 will provide any updates we receive.
