COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCBD)- The director of the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is retiring from the agency, the governor’s office announced Monday.

Robert M. Kerr will retire from his position on Nov. 1, 2024.

Gov. Henry McMaster nominated Kerr to lead the agency in 2021, which included overseeing South Carolina’s Medicaid program.

In announcing Kerr’s retirement, McMaster called him a “remarkable leader and dedicated public servant.”

“He has transformed and modernized our state’s Medicaid program and has led efforts to improve service, efficiency, and health outcomes at agencies across state government,” McMaster said. “South Carolina is a better place today because of the contributions and accomplishments of Director Kerr. He will be missed.”

This was Kerr’s second stint as director. He previously served in the role from 2003 to 2007 and worked at the agency for 22 years before that.

McMaster said decisions about who will lead the agency next will be announced in the “near future.”
