WALTERBORO, S.C. (WCBD) – A 9-year-old girl shot while inside a Walterboro home over the weekend suffered wounds to her arm and upper torso, according to new details released Tuesday morning.

Deputies with the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office and Colleton County Fire Rescue crews were called to Buffalo Lane around 5:50 p.m. Sunday. The child’s mother told first responders that the young girl was inside the home when bullets struck her during a possible domestic dispute.

According to the sheriff’s office, an argument between two adult men escalated when shots were fired outside. Bullets entered the home and struck the child.

Colleton County Fire Rescue officials said the child was critically injured with wounds to the upper torso and her arm.  The mother attempted to take the child to the hospital when she met deputies about a block away on Sunshine Lane.

“Deputies provided care to the child and controlled her profuse external bleeding before the arrival of Firefighter-Paramedics,” fire-rescue officials said.

The child was taken to Colleton Medical Center and then airlifted to the Children’s Trauma Center at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital in Charleston.

She underwent surgery shortly after arriving at the hospital. The sheriff’s office reported Monday that the young girl was still in the ICU.

    No other injuries were reported.

Brian Brookes Jr., 23, is wanted by the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office for assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature for firing his weapon toward the home while arguing with another male adult.

“His actions caused an innocent 9-year-old child to be struck by a bullet and suffer life-threatening injuries,” the sheriff’s office said.
