CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The long-awaited Sumar Street development will soon become a reality.

Charleston City Council approved plans for Ashley Landing on Tuesday. The dormant space will be transformed into a mixed-use property that includes green space, bike and pedestrian paths, and affordable housing.

For years, leaders could not agree on what to do with the former grocery store property; however, roughly a week ago, Charleston Mayor William Cogswell met with city leaders to discuss the new plan.

That development received its final approval from city council Tuesday night and redevelopment will move forward.

City leaders say the developer will close on the property and begin work. Construction is expected to start in the first quarter of 2025.

They said the developer will front the cost for all public infrastructure and will be reimbursed once the project is complete.
