NEW YORK (WCBD) – Longtime ‘TODAY’ co-anchor Hoda Kotb announced Thursday morning she is leaving NBC’s morning show.

It was a tearful message as Kotb, 60, said she was stepping away early next year.

“It was such a monumental moment for me when I turned 60 years old because I started thinking about that decade. What does that decade mean? What’s it going to hold? I realized it was time for me to turn the page at 60 and to try something new,” she said.

It was during her August birthday celebration that she came to the decision.

“I remembered standing outside looking at these beautiful bunch of people with these gorgeous signs, and I thought, ‘This is what the top of the wave feels like for me.’ And I thought it can’t get better, and I decided that this is the right time for me to kind of move on.”

Kotb will be with TODAY through the first of the year and said she plans on staying with the NBC family, but did not reveal what her role would be.

The journalist has been with NBC News for nearly three decades.
