Evening at McLeod to benefit Charleston County Parks Foundation’s Cultural History Fund

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The Charleston County Parks Foundation will host Evening at McLeod on Saturday, September 28, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at McLeod Plantation Historic Site.

The event will feature drinks, hors d’oeuvres, and performances by local African American artists, including the Charleston Symphony Brass ensemble, Alphonso Brown, and the Mt. Zion Spiritual Singers. A highlight of the evening will be the story of William Dawson, an enslaved man who transitioned to freedom and military service.

Located on James Island, McLeod Plantation Historic Site is a significant location for interpreting the African American transition to freedom and Gullah Geechee history. Opened as a Charleston County Park in 2015, the 37-acre former cotton plantation serves as a tribute to those who fought for freedom, equality, and justice. Visitors can explore the stories of individuals who helped shape Charleston’s complex past and America’s history.
