COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – The Colleton County Schools’ Buildings and Grounds team began assessing the condition of school facilities Friday and Saturday morning following widespread power outages caused by Hurricane Helene.

A significant number of schools remain without power and connectivity, with local and state emergency response teams reporting that 43% of the community is still without power.

Concerns over road safety, particularly downed trees, are also being addressed. As of now, school officials are unable to determine whether schools will reopen on Monday, September 30.

Assessments will continue through the weekend as crews work on restoring power and clearing roads. Families will receive an update regarding school operations by 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 29.
