COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – A 15-year-old student at Colleton County High School has been arrested after allegedly making a threat of a school shooting.

The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office was notified on Monday about a disturbing message discovered on a school bathroom wall, indicating a possible shooting on Tuesday, October 8. Rumors about the threat also circulated on social media.

In response to the threat, additional security personnel were stationed at the school as a precaution to ensure the safety of students and staff.

After the Criminal Investigation Division investigated, a 10th-grade student was identified as the suspect.

The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office stated that he has been expelled from the school and is facing charges under South Carolina law SC 16-17-425, which deals with student threats. They also disclosed that the student had been taken into custody and transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia.

Colleton County School District representative Mary Jo Fox said Tuesday night, “The student has been suspended from school and faces expulsion but has not officially been expelled. While the student has been arrested by the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office, the Colleton County School District has not held a formal disciplinary hearing to determine the outcome of the incident.”

The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident.
