Several people, including children, were injured during a field trip to an apple orchard in Western Wisconsin Wednesday.

Chippewa County Sheriff Travis Hakes says it happened at the Bushel and a Peck Apple Orchard in Lafayette. He says a wagon with adults and children tipped over injuring about 25 people.

"The children were extremely brave, very resilient, extremely brave," says Hakes. "I'm proud of every one of those kids. I was in the chaperones. They did a fantastic job."

Hakes says 22 were taken by ambulance. Hakes added that some were transported by personal vehicles. 25 people in total were taken to the hospital. Injuries range from minor to serious, with one person being taken by helicopter to the hospital.

Hakes says the wagon lost control, went down a hill, and rolled over.

"Pretty heart wrenching as a parent myself," the sheriff said. "You know, it's the parent's greatest fear that something happens to their children, especially when they're young like that."

Hakes said the cause of the accident is still under investigation.
