A 21-year old man given a controversial plea deal in a 2019 murder when he was just 15-years old is back in jail.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Dakota County, Husayn Braveheart is charged with fleeing police after being arrested in a stolen car over the weekend. Investigators say he allegedly reached speeds over 100 miles per hour after speeding away from police who tried to stop him in Eagan.

He ended up being tracked by helicopter to a house in south Minneapolis where he was arrested early Sunday morning.

Braveheart was involved in the 2019 carjacking and ultimately the murder of Steven Markey and accepted a plea deal offered by Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty. At the time, Moriarty said Braveheart was "turning his life around".

The request for a plea deal prompted outrage from Markey's family and the judge denied it, but in the end, did allow Braveheart to plead to a lesser charge. He was released the next week with credit for time served.

Another teen earlier pled guilty to pulling the trigger and is serving a 21-year sentence. Braveheart admitted firing a gun at Stephen Markey as well, even though it was the other teen that hit him.

In a statement released Thursday afternoon, the Hennepin County Attorney's Office says:

“We are aware of the situation in Dakota County. If the allegations are true, Mr. Braveheart will be held accountable.”

I’m may be mistaken. But! I think he was a past student of mine that I tried to warn the police about.
