The Minneapolis City Council has passed a new ordinance that will ensure more oversight of homeless encampment clearings.

Now there will be a requirement for the city to keep comprehensive public data when homeless encampments are cleared, but after a week of violence at an encampment in the East Phillips neighborhood, community leaders are asking for more action.

City Council Chair Jason Chavez says that will take some more effort from Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey.

"The lack of action and implementation, that is one person who gets to decide when to implement those, and that is the mayor of Minneapolis," says Chavez. "So we have solutions to these issues. We know that it's taking more than just the police department."

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey responded in a statements saying:

"City and state leaders need to work together to find solutions that are humane, compassionate, and safe for everyone" and that he hopes to put a stop to the violence.

Council members also refuted claims that this new ordinance will expose the personal information of city residents and encampment inhabitants.

Ward 12 Council member Aurin Chowdhury is dispelling what she calls "rumors" about the new plan.

"First, this is not legalizing encampments," says Chowdhury. "Second, this will not slow down Mayor Frey's practices to remove encampments. Third, there is not going to be any identifiable information of any Minneapolis resident who calls 911 or 311 in this reporting."

Council members say it will provide more transparency when it comes to tracking encampment locations and what resources are being offered to the people living there.

A suspect was arrested by Minneapolis Police following a string of shootings throughout the day that left at least two people dead and two others injured near the south Minneapolis homeless encampment.

The entire Mols city council is focused solely on its own woke agenda and nothing else. They have already helped destroy much of the city. Time for new leadership
