Minneapolis police have a suspect in custody after reports of shots fired inside a downtown apartment building.

It happened on East Grant Street between Nicollet Avenue and the Minneapolis Convention Center around 4:00 Monday afternoon. The incident forced the evacuation of residents.

Police Chief Brian O'Hara says right now there is no evidence of shots fired, but that a man inside the apartment building may have been experiencing a mental health crisis.

"During that time, the individual began breaking the wall between his apartment and the hallway as the officers were also evacuating residents from the 10th floor," O'Hara explained. "The individual then began throwing debris from the apartment outside of the window in the rear of the building."

O'Hara says the 34-year old suspect was taken into custody peacefully. He was taken to the hospital for minor injuries he sustained during the incident and he's being held for property damage.

"The only crime that we have at this time that he would be booked for is property damage, however, the investigation continues," says O'Hara. "We're uncertain if there was any shots fired. We do not have any ballistic evidence or a firearm recovered at this time."

Police say they will continue to investigate but no other injuries were reported to other residents or officers.

Earlier in September, O'Hara described another terrifying incident for dozens of residents after an active shooter wreaked havoc in an apartment building, with dozens of people calling 911. They reported a man walking around with a shotgun near Minnehaha Avenue and 40th Street East. That suspect was shot by Minneapolis police during an exchange of gunfire and survived.
