Vermilion Co. community answers animal shelter’s call for help

DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — On Tuesday evening, the Vermilion County Animal Shelter put out an urgent call to action requesting dog food and fosters. By the next day, community members went above and beyond in answering the call.

“Thankful doesn’t describe how we feel,” started a follow-up post on the shelter’s Facebook page.

The shelter said their food room is now overflowing with dog food donations. In another post soon after, officials also announced that several dogs entered both foster and adoptive homes. Others were reunited with their families.

“We can’t tell you how amazing it feels to know that our community supports us the way you do,” the post continued. “So many people and agencies donated, and thanked US, when all the thanks goes to them. Our job is tough, but days like this when we feel the love makes it a lot easier.”

Although officials are now feeling some relief in regard to food supply and space, they added that there are some supplies that they can never have too much of. Those include:

• Lysol wipes
• Office supplies
• Bright colored duct tape
• Newspapers
• Sharpies
• Kongs
• Laundry detergent
• Dryer sheets
• Dawn dish soap
• Paper towels
• Canned cat food
• Canned dog food
• Peanut butter
• Pill pockets
• Tarps
• Martingale collars
• Crates

Shelter officials said donations can be dropped off Monday – Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. After-hours donations can go into their garden box.
