CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Applications to be a member of the Champaign Board of Education will open next week, as a part of the search for new members to replenish the board’s ranks.

This comes after the board failed to come up with quorum to interview, discuss and vote on the candidates . Regional Superintendent Gary Lewis and five educators affiliated with Regional Office of Education 9 are deciding on replacements.

According to the Regional Office’s website, the requirements to be a board member include being a registered voter 18 years or older and a resident in the Champaign School District area for the past 12 months.

Officials ask for a submitted letter of intent, including a written statement on why candidates are interested in being a member of the Champaign Unit 4 School District Board of Education. A current, working phone number is also required for the application.

Applications will be accepted from Monday, May 13, 2024 to Friday, May 17, 2024 during business hours — between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. All applications must be submitted in-person at the Regional Office, located on Big Pine Trail in Champaign. The Office of Education will not accept emailed applications.

Interview dates will be on May 29 and May 30 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Officials reminded that these seats will be up for election in April 2025, and candidates will need to file paperwork with the County Clerk’s office to be on the ballot if they wish to remain on the Board.
