IDNR looking for public comment on next round of mine reclamation projects

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is looking for the public’s thoughts on proposed mine reclamation projects, including some in Central Illinois.

The funding for the project comes from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act passed in 2021.

IDNR was awarded $75.7 million in grants for the first year of 55 projects, including one at a former Springfield school. The federal government is allowing the agency to continue to receive $75.7 million per year for the next 15 years to address more reclamation needed in the state, including removing hazards, and solving problems from abandoned mine land emergencies.

Multiple planned reclamation projects for the second year are in Vermilion County. These include:

• Kickapoo Embankments Drainage – to correct drainage issues.
• Mauk Pond Embankment – to repair riprap to protect embankment.
• Nelson and Son Mine – to correct reclamation of vertical openings to protect residents.
• Dowiatt No. 2 – to seal mine openings
• Frederickson No. 1 – to seal vertical openings
• Missionfield Road Highwall – to address steep embankments.
• Kickapoo Sportman Lake – to address steep embankments.

Some other proposed projects for the second year of the grant in Central Illinois include acid mine drainage at Cosgrove Meehan No. 5 and Mount Olive and Livingston No. 1. in Montgomery County and reclamation to eliminate steep slopes and cover gob material at Wildlife Prairie Park in Peoria County.
