DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — The Decatur Police Department is starting a campaign this week that will double-down on traffic safety from now through Labor Day.

The enforcements will focus on impaired driving, failure to use seat belts, and more. It will last from Aug. 16-Sept. 3rd.

“We want our community to understand the importance of making smart decisions
behind the wheel, on Labor Day and every day,” said Sergeant Steve Hagemeyer. “While our
goal is voluntary compliance, drivers should expect strict enforcement of all traffic laws
    on Decatur roads every day.”

Authorities remind those celebrating to never drive under the influence and to always designate a sober driver. You should also ensure that friends or family members never drive drunk, high or impaired by other drugs, even in small amounts. This can throw off judgment and reaction times, making driving unsafe.

This campaign is part of a statewide effort brought forward by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
