Coroner Jim Allmon named interim Sangamon County Sheriff

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — While the search for the successor to Sangamon County Sheriff Jack Campbell has just officially started, a temporary leader has been assigned.

Sangamon County has assembled a committee to help board chairman Andy Van Meter pick the next Sheriff. Until that committee makes an appointment, the Sheriff’s position will be filled in the interim by Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon, the county said in a news release.

“While I did not seek or request this temporary assignment, I fully understand the importance of continuity in the Sheriff’s Office during this transition period,” Allmon said. “I am prepared to ensure that the Sheriff’s Office operates smoothly and efficiently, and I know that the existing team in the Sheriff’s Office shares that same dedication.”

“My role will be to uphold the constitutional responsibilities of the Sheriff’s Office until a permanent successor is appointed, and I will work closely with the staff to maintain public safety and service during this interim period,” he added.

The committee is set to nominate someone to fill the position within 60 days of the vacancy , as required by state law.

A Springfield native, Jim Allmon has worked as the Sangamon County Coroner since February 2020. He started as a Deputy Coroner in June 2003.
