CENTRAL ILLINOIS (WCIA) — Several Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants in Illinois have turned off their fryers for good.

According to KFC’s website, five locations in Central Illinois area are closed. Those include the Mattoon, Clinton, Champaign and the Springfield restaurants located on 9th Street and Jefferson.

It used to be cocaine and a nut — how is cola flavored today?

The KFCs in Charleston, Effingham, Taylorville, Urbana, Savoy, Decatur and the Springfield location on 6th Street all remain open, according to the website.

A YUM brand spokesperson, the parent company of KFC, confirmed the closure of some Illinois KFC restaurants but declined to share which stores remain open or closed.

“We can confirm that some KFC locations in the area have closed,” a YUM Brands spokesperson said. “The decision to close a restaurant is always difficult for both the franchisee and the brand. We appreciate the patronage of our loyal guests.”

The closures go beyond Central Illinois, with chain restaurants in Peoria , Bloomington, and Rockford also shutting their doors.

Before the closures, there were almost 150 KFC locations in Illinois.

This is a developing stor y.
