DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — The City of Decatur approved several projects at Monday nights’ city commission meeting.

They voted through restoring 9.4 miles of roads, plans to improve parking and the purchase of two pits of water — one 11.7 acre pit in Decatur and a 473 acre pit near Harristown.

Officials with the city’s water treatment plant said both are aimed at increasing the water supply by 30%.

“It really is the water future for Decatur,” said Water Production Manager Robert Weil. “It makes us, it diversifies our water supply. It gives us really drought resilience. It fills the lake. If we end up with a drought and the water is not coming downstream, we’ll just pump it up from down there. And so it makes me very happy that the council authorized this investigation and future acquisition, and we’re very thankful to them for that.”

They say $100,000/year in treatment costs can be saved due to a cleaner water supply.
