CHARLESTON, Ill. (WCIA) — Coles County Animal Shelter is closing for a day to honor the life of a member of their team.

The shelter posted on their Facebook page they will be closed Saturday for James Aitken Sr.’s celebration of life. Aitken died earlier this month at the age of 52.

Aitken started with the Coles County Animal Shelter in 2017 and became an integral part of the team fast. Loved ones said he was dedicated to caring for the animals in the shelter.

“Jim never met an animal that he didn’t love at first sight and often fostered many animals in his home,” part of his obituary reads.

Aitken’s family is requesting anyone to make donations to the animal shelter in lieu of flowers.

Online condolences for Aitken can be expressed on Schilling Funeral Home’s Facebook page or website.
