DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — The City of Danville is making strides in addressing its downtown area by buying the old National Bank building.

Danville City Council voted unanimously to approve the purchase at their meeting Tuesday night.

The City said the decision aligns with the plans for downtown redevelopment. It also involves moving City Hall to the bank because their current building has roof leaks, cracking walls and a broken elevator.

The City plans to demolish the old city hall, along with the long-awaited Bresee Tower and the courthouse annex.

Some members of the community said even though the tower has served as a reminder of the history in town, developing new buildings can help create a new legacy.

“It’s heartbreaking,” Terry Lake said. “It’s probably the most iconic structure built in the Danville skyline in Danville’s history.”

Others believe it’s time for something new in the downtown area.

“I know it’s a big part of history for the Danville area, but it’s been empty for so long and it’s becoming a hazard,” Danville business owner Sarah Colby said. “I just feel like it’s time for something new to bring downtown. You know, we’re been revitalizing the whole downtown area and we can utilize that space for so many different things that would be so beneficial to the area.”

The bank still has a lease extending into 2029. The city is currently working on how employees will stay in the building once they move in.
