(WCIA) — Eastern Illinois will play the Illini for the first time in 16 years to kick off the season.

After finishing the 2023 season 8-3, the Panthers were ranked second in the Big South/OVC Preseason Poll, quite the turnaround under head coach Chris Wilkerson.

“I know they play really good defense, and I know that because of two reasons,” said Illinois offensive coordinator Barry Lunney. “Number one, it shows up on the film. And number two, their head coach and I go way back and have a very strong relationship with Chris Wilkerson and Sharna. We worked with him at San Jose State.”

The Panthers will take the field at Memorial Stadium on Thursday, August 29 at 8 p.m.
