MONTICELLO, Ill. (WCIA) — Monticello Railway Museum volunteers are hard at work fixing some tracks that need improvements.

Volunteers have been working on the Illinois Central and Illinois Terminal train tracks for nearly nine months.

Right now, the tracks will lead you into a dead end. The plan is to connect them so trains can eventually run more efficiently.

“It’ll give us another route that we can take with a museum or potentially what we have Railroad Days coming up,” Museum Ticket Agent John Downing said. “You could have one train heading to White Heath and another train coming back and pass each other then.”

He says to complete it, they still need heavier, new rail. It’ll all take time, and there’s not a set date it’ll be completed.

The construction is happening about 8 minutes away from the new museum and does not affect visitors.
