(WCIA) — This season, Illinois offensive coordinator Barry Lunney will be able to talk directly to junior quarterback Luke Altmyer during gameplay.

The NCAA approved helmet communications in April, and the Illini have been getting used to the system this preseason.

“It’s been smooth,” said Altmyer. “I really like it being able to, you know, audibly hear, you know, Coach Lunney’s voice and hear in the play call instead of deciphering, you know, hand signals, you know, so like so obviously that makes it easier for me and mainly really in helping me, you know, navigate teammates and being able to relay calls to my guys up front and everybody around me.”

Illinois kicks off the season on August 29 against Eastern Illinois.
