URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — The University of Illinois Police Department is investigating after someone vandalized Foellinger Auditorium over the weekend.

Each of the six columns on the front of the building were painted with one letter to spell out the word “DIVEST.” By Monday afternoon, the columns were covered up by orange and blue wraps.

Last spring, the area around Foellinger Auditorium was the site of a two-week “encampment” protest , by demonstrators who called for the University of Illinois to divest from companies with ties to Israel, in protest of the nearly year-long war in Gaza. The encampment ended as many students returned home for the summer , but Students for Justice in Palestine said their mission was not over.

U of I Police told WCIA that officers are reviewing video footage and other information to determine accurate information about a suspect. As of 3:30 on Tuesday, officers have not provided us with those details.

This is a developing story. We will provide updates as we learn more.
