SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — Water treatment plants in Springfield are getting $54,000 from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.

Each plant will receive upgrades to lighting, pump optimizations, and HVAC modifications to make them more energy efficient.

“Energy efficiency upgrades in public water facilities are not just about reducing operational costs—they’re integral to environmental stewardship, regulatory compliance, and community well-being,” Illinois EPA Interim Director James Jennings said. “These upgrades contribute to a more sustainable and resilient drinking water infrastructure that benefits all residents.”

In addition to Springfield, the cities of Highland Park and Aurora were also awarded money. The U.S. Department of Energy’s state energy program is providing the funding.
