CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District is taking steps to help parents keep firearms away from their children.

“Moms Demand Action” handed out gun safety information in the district on Wednesday as part of “Safe Week.” The program aims to inform and remind parents to store their firearms in secure locations and away from their kids’ reach.

The Be-Smart program also gave away free gun locks in addition to stickers and informational booklets.

“We want people to start making sure that they’re asking, ‘Do you have firearms in the home? Are they stored in a secure way so that, again, kids don’t get curious and find a gun and have an unintentional shooting?'” said Colleen Aziz, Community Outreach Leader for Moms Demand Action of Champaign-Urbana.

She said the group will offer the same resources at the Urbana Farmers Market every month.
