CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The Illinois Department of Transportation is hosting another public meeting in the Champaign-Urbana area to inform people about a proposed construction project.

The project is the proposed replacement of the bridge that carries Kirby Avenue over Interstate 57. The existing bridge was designed to accommodate rural and agricultural traffic, not bicyclists and pedestrians who now routinely use the bridge.

Last week, the City of Champaign unanimously approved applying for a grant that would help pay for the bridge replacement project. Whether or not the city gets the grant, the project will go out to bid next year with construction planned to begin in 2026.

Before then, IDOT will host a public meeting about the project. It will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sept. 10 at the atrium of Parkland College’s Building U.

Like past meetings IDOT has hosted, this one will be conducted on an informal basis with project displays and other information available for viewing. IDOT representatives will be on hand to explain the project, answer individual questions and record comments from those in attendance.

People who properties may be affected by this project are especially encouraged to attend and make comments.
