    Champaign Co. Coroner identifies man killed in fiery May crash

    URBANA, Ill. WCIA) — More than three months after a deadly crash in Champaign County , the Coroner released the identity of the victim.

    The crash happened on May 15 in Hensley Township, northeast of Champaign. Sheriff Dustin Heuerman said a car was driving north on County Road 900 E late at night when it crossed over the center line and was hit by a southbound car.

    The northbound car caught fire, and its driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Coroner Stephen Thuney said at the time that he had a tentative identity of the driver, but only DNA testing could confirm it.

    On Friday morning, Thuney released the driver’s name, having confirmed the identity through testing done by the Illinois State Police.

    The driver was Cody Messer, 32 of Fisher.
