SHELDON, Ill. (WCIA) — The Illinois State Police have shared more details on a deputy-involved shooting Sunday near the Illinois-Indiana border.

State Police said the sequence of events started in Iroquois County. Iroquois County Sheriff’s deputies pursued a suspect who was reportedly armed and with a hostage. The chase crossed the border into Newton County, Indiana, and the Newton County Sheriff’s Office joined the pursuit.

The chase crossed back into Illinois, State Police said, and the suspect crashed his car in Sheldon.

After crashing, the suspect got out of the car and exchanged gunfire with law enforcement. Both the suspect and Newton County Sheriff’s Corporal Brandon Schreiber were hit by gunfire.

The suspect, 37-year-old Andrew Roselius of Clifton, was pronounced dead on the scene. No hostage was found in his car.

Corporal Schreiber, meanwhile, is still in critical condition at Carle Hospital in Urbana.

The Iroquois County Sheriff’s Department asked Illinois State Police to assist in the investigation at 8:45 p.m. Sunday. After the investigation is complete, State Police will turn over their findings to the Iroquois County State’s Attorney’s Office.
