CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The University of Illinois Police Department will continue to help out the Champaign Police Department.

The city council voted unanimously to extend its agreement between the university and the city. UIPD helps out by patrolling an area of Campustown and provides services like responding to 911 calls, traffic control and investigation of local ordinances.

The partnership started in April 2022 as a way of helping both departments with being understaffed. That partnership was set to expire this month until city council renewed it.

The city will pay U of I around $1.26 million per year for two years. There is an option to extend the agreement to add a third year at a new rate.
