SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — An inmate at the Sangamon County Jail is back behind bars after the Sheriff’s Office said he escaped custody on Wednesday.

Interim Sheriff Jim Allmon said Chane Jones, 42, was able to escape after he mingled with three other inmates, who were then released from custody. After exiting the jail, Jones made his way to 5th Street and Peoria Road, where Allmon said Sheriff’s deputies and U.S. Marshals arrested him and readmitted him into the jail.

Jones had been booked the previous day on a warrant regarding burglary and theft. He now faces additional charges for his escape from custody.

The incident remains under investigation by the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office, Allmon said.
