MATTOON, Ill. (WCIA) – One person is displaced from their Mattoon apartment following a fire Thursday morning.

The Mattoon Fire Department said crews responded to 21st Street and Champaign Avenue at 4 a.m. and saw smoke and flames coming from a first-floor apartment. Smoke was found on all three floors of the building, and several tenants were helped out of the building.

Officials said the fire was contained to the apartment where it started, and it was put out within 10 minutes. Crews ventilated the structure to make it safe for tenants to return to their apartments, and they left the scene just before 6 a.m.

The American Red Cross was called to help the tenant who is displaced because of this fire. No one was hurt.

The fire is currently under investigation, but a department investigator believes it was accidental.
