CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — A 22-year-old woman is recovering in the hospital after Champaign Police said she was shot late Thursday night.

Police officials said that just before 11 p.m., the department received a report of shots being fired in the area of Holly Hill Drive and Hedge Road. Responding officers found shell casings and bullet damage to two homes and a car.

20 minutes later, officials said a gunshot victim arrived at an area hospital by personal transport. She had been shot in the torso, but officials expect her to survive. She remains hospitalized in stable condition.

After speaking with the victim, investigators learned she was sitting in her car on Holly Hill Drive when an altercation in the area escalated to shots being fired. Police do not know yet if the victim’s car was the intended target or if the bullet that hit her was a stray shot.

The shot was fired from another car in the area, officials said, which fled the scene. So far, no arrests have been made yet.

Champaign Police are canvassing the area and looking for witnesses who saw or security cameras that recorded what happened.
