URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — The Newton County Sheriff’s Office in Indiana has announced that their Corporal who was shot in Iroquois County last week will not survive his injuries.

Corporal Brandon Schreiber has been at Carle Hospital in Urbana ever since he was shot in the line of duty near Sheldon on Sept. 1 . Schreiber was assisting in a police chase that crossed the Illinois-Indiana border twice and was hurt in an exchange of gunfire with the suspect, who was shot and killed.

The last update the Illinois State Police provided to WCIA was that Schreiber was in critical condition.

On Tuesday, the Newton County Sheriff’s Office announced on behalf of the Schreiber family that “despite the tremendous and heroic efforts of his medical team, we have been informed he will not survive his injuries.”

Schreiber is an organ donor, the Sheriff’s Office said, and his sacrifice “will present the opportunity for him to help many other people.”

The Sheriff’s Office also expressed appreciation for the outpouring of support from the community and from other law enforcement agencies. They promised an update later this week.

The Iroquois County Sheriff’s Office acknowledged the latest update on their Facebook page , asking that people keep the Schrieber family and the Newton County Sheriff’s Office in their thoughts and prayers.
