CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — After only a few months on the job, a Champaign athletic director is no longer with the school district.

In an email sent out to families from Champaign Central High School Wednesday, principal Joe Williams announced athletic director and assistant principal Patrick Cox stepped down from his role.

Officials said they are committed to a smooth transition of athletic programs at the high school.

“We recognize the significant role student athletics plays in student development both within the classroom and beyond,” Williams said in the letter. “We remain dedicated to supporting all of our athletic programs and ensuring continued success for our student-athletes.”

Two arrested after shots fired, police chase on I-57 in Champaign Co.

Cox is no longer listed on the school district’s staff directory, nor on IHSA’s website. Officials said in the letter Cox’s position is being posted.

Champaign Police confirmed with WCIA earlier this week Cox was arrested for domestic battery. Jail records show Cox was booked and released.

Cox was appointed at a June Board of Education meeting, and previously worked as a P.E. teacher, Driver’s Education teacher and coach at various Chicago schools.

A spokesperson for the school district said they don’t comment on personnel matters.
