COLES COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — Two Secretary of State facilities are being transformed into “One-Stop-Shop” locations in Coles County later this month.

The new experience for the DMV hopes to reduce wait times and improve efficiency for Illinois residents. Employees have been cross-trained to serve both drivers and vehicle services from one counter. In addition, customer services counters and signs will be changed to be more logical, Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias said.

Illinois DMVs now accept digital wallet payments

With single-service counters, Giannoulias said it will be easier for Illinois customers to obtain the following services:

    • Apply for a REAL ID or a new driver’s license or state ID card.
    • Renew a driver’s license, state ID or Temporary Visitor Driver’s License (TVDL).
    • Register or renew their vehicle registration and obtain vehicle stickers.
    • Order a new license plate.
    • Join the Illinois Organ and Tissue Donor Registry.

“Since taking office, we’ve made it a top priority to provide exceptional customer service and reduce lines and wait times,” the Secretary of State said. “Our Charleston and Mattoon facilities will be among the first to get this makeover that will give them a modern feel while employing new technology to create efficiencies.”

Both locations will be temporarily closed for renovations, but will offer a temporary service location. For Charleston, its facility will close Sept. 16-20 but will offer services at Charleston Carnegie Public Library on 6th St. for that week. The Mattoon DMV will close the following week from Sept. 23-27, but customers can visit the Mattoon Public Library on Charleston Avenue for any need.
