    Student arrested in connection to social media threat to Mattoon school

    MATTOON, Ill. (WCIA) — Mattoon Police have arrested a student suspected of making a threat on social media towards St. John Lutheran Middle School and High School.

    The student was met by officers as they arrived on campus and were immediately investigated. The suspect was detained and their parents were notified.

    St John’s says they immediately took action to ensure the safety of all their students.

    “St. John’s Lutheran Church and School is committed to the safety and security of all our students,” Meghan Hagen, the interim principal at St. John’s, said in a letter. “We are thankful for the fast response of our faculty and staff as well as our partnership with the MPD.”

    The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about these threats is encouraged to contact the Mattoon Police Department at (217) 235-5451.
