CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — University of Illinois police responded to a domestic incident on campus after the homecoming game Saturday evening.

Authorities said it happened around 7 p.m. at Tailgating Lot 31. Witnesses told police that a man was battering a female and waving a gun around. Police found two handguns on him. They arrested him on weapons and domestic battery charges.

“We have bystanders that witnessed it, who didn’t hesitate to call police. They stuck around and made statements. They helped identify the person that was causing the problem,” said Detective Lieutenant Grant Briggs. “Our officers were able to detain that person and make an arrest, and we got guns off the street.”

UIPD said they always reassess after instances like this to make safety a priority.
