URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and researchers in a Central Illinois cancer center are working to understand the disease.

Erik Nelson is a researcher at the Cancer Center at Illinois (CCIL) and a professor of Molecular and Integrative Physiology at the University of Illinois.

He says his research involves learning how to change the immune system, to convince it to attack cancer instead of helping it.

Nelson also said women are often diagnosed with ovarian cancer when it’s already in a later stage. He says it’s important to listen to your body and go to the doctor when you feel unwell.
