CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — Eight people, including six children, were involved in a Tuesday morning crash north of Rantoul, the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office said.

The children were not seriously hurt and the adult drivers are also expected to be okay.

The crash happened at 7:23 a.m. in Ludlow Township at the intersection of County Roads 3300N and 1500E. Officials with the Sheriff’s Office said two vehicles were involved — a Toyota Corolla and a Chevrolet Traverse.

The intersection is a two-way stop with stop signs on 1500E, but not on 3300N. Officials said the investigation indicated the southbound Traverse did not stop at the intersection and failed to yield to the eastbound Corolla. The Corolla t-boned the Traverse’s passenger side, causing the Traverse to roll over.

Officials said the driver and sole occupant of the Corolla, a 31-year-old woman from Gibson City, was able to get herself out of her car. There were seven people inside the Traverse — the 42-year-old driver from Paxton and six children ages 1 to 15. All seven were trapped in the wreckage of their SUV and were extricated by firefighters.

The six children were evaluated on scene by medical personnel and were released to another family member who was not involved in the crash. Both drivers were taken to the hospital but are expected to be ok.

Officials added that the driver of the Traverse was ticketed for failing to yield at the stop sign and for failing to provide proof of insurance for their car.
