SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — Two people are under arrest in Springfield after police said they caught the duo trying to burglarize a downtown property twice in three days.

Officials with the Springfield Police Department said both burglary attempts happened at 4th and Adams Streets. The first happened Friday at 9 p.m.; a male and female suspect were seen on camera trying to enter a building. When officers responded, they saw a white U-Haul in the area, but officials said they didn’t know if it was involved in the burglary. No one was arrested that night.

UPDATE: Champaign battery report was ‘inaccurate,’ no threat to campus

Two days later, at 11:42 p.m., officers responded again to 4th and Adams for a report of the same two suspects entering the building. The suspects weren’t located at the scene, officials said, but an officer spotted a white U-Haul nearby at 6th and Ash Streets. A man and a woman were found on bikes at the back of the truck, and officials said they matched the people seen on camera.

The two were identified as Nathanial Barnes, 45, and Joyce Rushing, 47, both of Springfield. Officers arrested them for burglary, and they have been formally charged by the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Anyone who has further information about these burglary incidents is asked to contact the Springfield Police Department at 217-788-8311 or Sangamon/Menard County Crime Stoppers at 217-788-8427.
