DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) – It’s been more than a month since cows got loose and were killed on I-57 in Douglas County. Now, a billboard that reads “I’m me. Not meat,” is up in the area.

In August, a semi-truck carrying cows crashed. 20 cows were killed, and another 16 got loose.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) put up the billboard to remember the cows that died.

“[I] will point out that these were feeling-sensitive living beings who were thrown across the roadway and ultimately many of them died,” PETA Vegan Campaigns Manager Amber Canavan said. “We’re reminding people that animals are individuals, they’re not just objects.”

Some of the cows that ran away have been caught. The Douglas County engineer said two are still missing in the corn.
