CENTRAL ILLINOIS (WCIA) – Restoration efforts are already underway in communities hit by Helene, and a growing number of people from Illinois are on their way to help.

More than 1,000 Red Cross volunteers are stationed across Georgia, Florida and the Carolinas. They’re positioned at more than 60 shelters helping with housing and food for people impacted by the storm.

People from Illinois started deploying last week. 36 volunteers are now there or en route. That number is up 14 from yesterday.

“We expect that number to continue to climb because really this is not going to be a short term response,” Red Cross spokesperson Jayce Eustice said. “It’s going to be something that’s taking place over the days, weeks and even months to come.”

The volunteers will stay for about two weeks. They could extend their deployment if needed.
